Is It Possible To Change My A/C Unit’s Fan Speed?

AC Unit Maintenance in Hayden. ID

If your home has a central HVAC system, you should already know that it relies on a blower motor to circulate air in your home. The trouble is, most HVAC blowers operate at a preset speed you can’t easily change. Although it’s possible to change the blower speed of most HVAC systems, it’s not a DIY process. Just for general information, here is an overview of how an HVAC technician would change the speed of most HVAC blower fans.

Disconnect the Unit’s Power

The first step to changing the blower’s speed is to disconnect its power supply. In some cases, the HVAC air handler will have a small circuit-breaker panel near it with a switch that can disconnect the power to the unit. If not, it’s sometimes necessary to turn off the breaker supplying the air handler’s power from your home’s central electrical panel. It’s essential for the HVAC technician to be completely sure that the power’s off, however, because the next step involves accessing the blower motor’s wiring.

Open the Air Handler Cover

The next step is to find and open the access panel on the air handler itself. This makes it possible to access the power wires of the blower motor itself. Most modern HVAC systems feature three- or four-speed blower motors. Each speed has its own power supply wire. The wire that you connect to the power source sets the speed for the motor. This should not be done unless you are a trained HVAC technician.
