Why Isn’t My Heater Turning Off?

It is frustrating when your heater won’t turn off. There are a few issues that can cause this situation, and three of them related to your thermostat.

Incorrect Thermostat Setting

Check your thermostat’s settings. The fan can be set to “ON” and “AUTO.” Make sure it’s set to “AUTO” so the fan only runs when the heater is on. It will otherwise run nonstop. Note this doesn’t mean your heater is running, just the fan blower.

Malfunctioning Thermostat

Thermostats can break just like any other electronic device. This can be caused by faulty wiring, a broken heat sensor or a broken switch. You may be able to get it repaired. Otherwise, it needs to be replaced. Fortunately, new thermostats have more features than ever, which makes them wise investments.

Temperature Set Too High

Ensure that you don’t have the thermostat set at too high a temperature. Your heater may not be able to reach this temperature and so it will run constantly. Set the temperature no higher than 78 degrees.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, which can cause your heater to run nonstop. Check the air filter and replace it if it’s dirty. The problem should resolve within an hour.

Damaged Blower Motor

A constantly running heater can be a sign the blower motor is damaged. As this isn’t a problem you can fix yourself, call an HVAC company to inspect your heating system.

Leaky Ducts

Your ducts may have developed leaks over time, or they may have been incorrectly installed. With too many leaks, a lot of the warm air your heater produces is lost in unconditioned spaces. You can have an HVAC company seal your ducts.

We had a small gas leak next to our water heater which obviously caused a little scare. I called Borders and within 2 hours of the initial call had made it out to the property and repaired the leak with no issues. I came home yesterday evening and my wife told me the A/C wasn't working properly. As always seems to be the case when things stop working, the timing was perfect (not). It was over 90 degrees outside and the next several days were supposed to be 100. AND our daughter and her husband were coming up the following day to visit for the next several days (of course).Our good friends had recommended Border to us and we'd always heard great things about them from other people. So we called and spoke to their after hours dispatcher who told us that their on-call technician, Matt, was on another call but would call us back when he was done.Around 9pm, Matt called. He was very nice and initially tried to help us over the phone to help save us the expense of having to pay for a service call. However, once he realized that we'd done everything possible to resolve the issue, he said he'd be right over.When he arrived, he was very polite and very thorough. He checked everything and explained what he was doing as he went. He finally found that the main A/C capacitor had gone bad and promptly replaced it. We have been using Border for over 10 years to service our heat pump/furnace. After they did their yearly tuneup in early June, my heat pump decided to die! It was 100% nothing to do with them, just my heat pump reached the end of it’s lifespan (13 years) made worse by the way our zoning system which was installed initially by another company. Border limped it along for years and when the compressor broke 4th of July weekend and the first warm weather we had…..they came to the rescue. I think they felt bad for us and knew we made an effort to maintain our equipment over the years. I spent the holiday weekend trying to line up bids for an A/C instead of a heat pump, with the plan to continue to limp along my gas furnace. Border even came out a few times after hours and tried to limp it along, but no luck. Because I have ALWAYS been so impressed with their quick responses, I knew I would only use them for future maintenance, this meant I wanted to buy the equipment they sell. This means Lennox. The 5th of July we came up with a plan to get a Lennox A/C, new furnace, smart thermostat, and zone improvement. I decided I didn’t want to be replacing the furnace next year and our thermostat was already trying to die. Yes, there was a pretty chunk of savings gone overnight! However, in 3 days I had the entire thing replaced!!! Other companies were not going to be able to do that till the end of August!! No way, would summer be any fun, without A/C, but also in a supply shortage and labor shortage, it is to be expected. Again, this is why I am SO HAPPY with Border. I have a new amazing Lennox system and I’m kicking back enjoying the cool air! Thanks again!!

Border Sheet Metal's technician was the most skilled and knowledgable repairman possible. His understanding of a furnace was astonishing. I called three companies when our furnace stopped on a very cold day. One (the original installer) did not have our install in their new system and had to "check" and call back. Another sent a technician that misinterpreted the error codes and wanted to charge us over $1,000 and could not repair the system that day. Then Border Sheet Metal offered to send someone over for a 2nd opinion. The difference was astounding. The Border technician found the problem, fixed it and corrected two other problems and had the furnace running just fine. (no circuit board needed!). Polite, professional and the best customer service you could want. Highly recommend this company.
